Issue No. 8 - Engaging Fathers Who Commit Family Violence: Issues and Challenges for Family Courts

Despite important legislative progress toward increasing awareness of family violence (FV) in family courts, significant gaps remain in the expectations and procedures involved in addressing cases with histories of abuse. This brief explores this challenge with a focus on evidence-informed approaches to engaging fathers who are at risk of continued FV. It explains why a focus on fatherhood presents a necessary and promising approach for FV counselling and education. In particular, it draws upon recent program evaluation research to illustrate how collaborative, tailored approaches to risk assessment and intervention can help prevent post-separation violence as well as enable fathers who commit abuse to build healthier, safer relationships with their children.
